What is a SiGeKo?

Construction work is always associated with specific hazards, as workers are exposed to harsh weather conditions, working at heights, and other risks.

Additionally, construction sites often involve multiple companies working on the same project. To prevent them from endangering each other, their activities must be coordinated and aligned. This is where the Safety and Health Protection Coordinator (SiGeKo) comes in.

When is a SiGeKo required?

As a client (or an authorized representative), you are legally required under § 3 of the Construction Site Ordinance (Baustellenverordnung – BaustellV) to appoint one or more Safety and Health Protection Coordinators (SiGeKo) if multiple employers are working on your construction site. Before starting work, the contractor must inform the SiGeKo about the planned work processes and intended safety measures. The SiGeKo ensures that workplace safety and health protection measures are coordinated among all parties involved in the project, aiming to minimize workplace accidents and eliminate potential hazards for workers.

A construction site is classified as particularly hazardous if work takes place in contaminated areas beyond regular construction activities. In such cases, additional governmental and trade association regulations apply.

When must a SiGeKo be appointed?
A Safety and Health Protection Coordinator (SiGeKo) is required on construction sites to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. The appointment of a SiGeKo follows the Construction Site Ordinance (BaustellV) and other relevant regulations.

Safety and Health Protection Plan (SiGe-Plan)

The Safety and Health Protection Plan (SiGe-Plan) is a key document for ensuring safety and health protection on construction sites involving multiple employers. It is created in accordance with the Construction Site Ordinance (BaustellV) and serves as the foundation for a coordinated and safe working environment for all parties involved.

Preliminary Notice

The preliminary notice is a legally required notification to the relevant authority regarding planned construction projects that meet specific criteria. According to Section 2 of the Construction Site Ordinance (BaustellV), it is required when multiple employers are involved on-site and either the project duration exceeds 30 working days with more than 20 workers simultaneously employed or the total scope of work exceeds 500 person-days.

The preliminary notice includes key details about the construction project, such as the location, type and scope of work, involved companies, and responsible coordinators. It must be submitted before construction begins and updated in case of significant changes.

Our team prepares the preliminary notice in a timely manner for the client’s construction project and submits it on schedule to the relevant authority. This ensures that all regulatory requirements are met and that a smooth and legally compliant construction process is guaranteed.
